If you have walked through our front door, you already know Custom Gunworks as a place where firearms get real, honest work done on them. Starting today, we are opening up a bit more of that world through this blog. Whether you are a longtime customer or someone who just found us searching for a gunsmith nearby, we want this space to be useful to you.
This is not going to be a page full of generic tips copied from somewhere else. Everything we publish here comes from what we actually see on the bench every week, the questions customers ask us at the counter, and the lessons we have picked up over years of repairing, restoring, and customizing rifles, shotguns, and handguns.
Why We Started This Blog
We get a lot of the same questions over and over. Why does my trigger feel gritty after a few thousand rounds. What is the actual difference between Cerakote and bluing. How should I store a rifle over the summer if I am not hunting again until fall. Those are good questions, and they deserve better answers than a rushed explanation while we are also trying to check in three other firearms.
The blog gives us room to slow down and actually explain things properly. It also means that if you are researching a repair or a project before you even call us, you can get a straight answer from people who do this work daily instead of guessing based on a forum post from someone you have never met.

What You Can Expect to Find Here
We are going to keep this practical. You will not find filler articles padded out with vague advice. Here is the kind of content we plan to post regularly.
- ◆Gunsmithing tips that explain what actually happens during common services like trigger work, sight installation, and scope mounting
- ◆Maintenance guidance to help you catch small problems before they turn into expensive ones
- ◆Restoration and custom project spotlights, so you can see the kind of work we do and get ideas for your own firearm
- ◆Optics and sight advice for hunters and shooters trying to pick the right setup
- ◆Shop updates, including new equipment, new capabilities, and any changes to our hours or services
- ◆Safety and compliance basics, explained in plain language without pretending to be legal advice
Rooted in the Same Values as Our Shop
Custom Gunworks has always leaned into a straightforward, no-nonsense approach, the kind of craftsmanship you would expect from a shop built on old school values with modern precision tools. That same mindset carries over into what we write. We would rather give you a short, accurate answer than a long one padded with buzzwords.
We also believe in being upfront about what a gunsmith can and cannot help with over a blog post. Some things genuinely require a hands on inspection. When that is the case, we will tell you so plainly, and we will always point you toward bringing the firearm in rather than trying to talk you through something that needs a trained eye and the right tools.

A Few Topics Already on Deck
In the coming weeks we will be publishing pieces on the warning signs that a firearm needs professional attention, what actually happens during a trigger job, how to choose a scope for a hunting rifle, and the real differences between Cerakote and traditional bluing. We are also planning a piece on storing firearms properly through the off season, since that question comes up constantly as the seasons change.
Down the line we want to cover restoration projects on older rifles and shotguns, custom builds that balance performance with a classic cowboy aesthetic, and the kind of practical questions people ask before starting a custom project. If there is a topic you would like us to cover, mention it next time you stop by or reach out through the shop.
Thanks for Reading
We appreciate everyone who has trusted us with their firearms over the years, and we are glad to have a place to share a little more of the craft behind that work. Bookmark this page, check back regularly, and as always, if you have a firearm that is acting up, feels off, or just needs a proper cleaning and inspection, our door is open.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often will you post new blog content?
+
We plan to publish new articles on a regular basis, covering maintenance tips, project spotlights, and shop news. Check back periodically or ask us in the shop about recent posts.
Can I suggest a topic for a future blog post?
+
Absolutely. If there is a gunsmithing topic you would like explained, let us know next time you visit or reach out to the shop directly.
Is the blog a substitute for bringing my firearm in for inspection?
+
No. The blog is meant to inform and answer general questions, but any hands on diagnosis or repair should be done in person by a qualified gunsmith who can physically inspect your firearm.
Will you cover specific brands or models?
+
We will often reference general categories of rifles, shotguns, and handguns rather than focusing on one brand, since the issues and services we discuss tend to apply broadly across firearm types.
Do you offer the services mentioned in the blog at your shop?
+
Yes, the topics we write about, including maintenance, trigger work, sight and scope installation, restoration, and custom work, reflect services we actually perform. Contact us for availability and scheduling.
Where can I ask a question if I do not see it answered here?
+
You are welcome to call or visit the shop directly. Our team is happy to talk through your firearm's needs before you bring it in.
